Fed holds rates at 3.75%-4% as two officials dissent in favor of a hike
The Federal Reserve voted 10-2 to hold its policy rate at 3.75%-4%, as markets expected. Cleveland Fed President Beth Hammack and Governor Lisa Cook dissented, both favoring a hike. Attention now turns to whether the Fed raises rates at its December meeting, with Chair Kevin Warsh's press conference due at 2:30 PM ET. In early trading Wednesday the S&P 500 was near 7,725 (+0.04%), the Dow near 52,435 (+0.11%) and the Nasdaq near 26,424 (-0.20%); these are intraday readings, not closes.
Oil above $100, 10-year yield near 5%, and Big Tech earnings after the bell
December crude futures were near $103.03, up 3.13%, and the 10-year Treasury yield was about 5.03%, up 0.03 points, in intraday trading. The VIX was 17.20. SK Hynix rose sharply after record profit and revenue, with operating profit up about 632% and a forecast of memory shortages into 2030. Wendy's jumped about 15% premarket on reports that Trian Partners offered $1.4 billion to buy it, while Robinhood fell nearly 8% premarket after weaker-than-expected third-quarter profit. Microsoft and Alphabet report after the close, with AI demand and capital spending in focus.
Concept of the Day
Dissent and Forward Guidance
Forward guidance is how a central bank signals where policy is likely headed, shaping market expectations before it acts. Markets move on the expected path of rates, not just the current rate, so the words around a decision can matter as much as the decision itself. A dissent is a vote against the majority. Fed votes are usually lopsided, so a split is informative: it shows which way the committee's internal debate is leaning. Dissents in favor of a hike suggest some officials think policy is too easy, and a growing number can raise the odds that the majority joins them. Traders read dissents alongside the statement, the press conference and the Fed's projections. The direction of the dissent matters more than the count: two hawkish dissents on a hold signal pressure toward tightening, while dovish dissents signal the opposite. Dissents are not decisions, though, and the majority often holds firm.
Why it matters
Wednesday's 10-2 hold had two dissents, Hammack and Cook, and both wanted a hike. With oil above $100 and the 10-year yield near 5.03%, that tilts the debate toward tightening and keeps a December hike in play. Chair Warsh's 2:30 PM ET press conference is where traders will test how much weight the majority gives those dissents.
